Markthalle IX

The Berlin-based Raumlabor is working with a project called Markhalle IX, to create a contemporary market hall in Kreuzberg. More about the project here.

Our understanding of a market corresponds to the idea of a city within the city: a microcosm of great diversity is created through the direct clash of different people and goods. As a place of meeting, trading and negotiating a market is an important public space which immediately creates a variety of social and political functions. The microstructure of a market allows individual differentiation and transparent exchange.

It’s such a good idea to think about alternatives to supermarket chains and try to revitalize the existing and traditional urban systems of shopping, such as the markets. Also, the large local Turkish community is integral to the plan.
