A freshly finished design by modernist architect Jakob “Jaap” Bakema in Geuzenveld, Amsterdam (1957-1958). Photo: Jan Vrijhof.
There’s always something strangely hopeful in the images of new modern neighborhoods, inhabited by their first residents, walking the newly paved streets, touching the unused railings. Even though the services or connections around them might yet not be there, and even though we know the setting so often led to problems, there’s still something innocently heroic in the everyday meeting the functional for the first time.
